ABI15010 – INTERNATIONAL BASIC FIRE SAFETY TRAINING COURSE
COURSE OVERVIEW
Students will receive all the knowledge and skills necessary to assess Fire Risk and how Fire Prevention can be managed. This course is designed for employees, supervisors and managers who may have or are looking to develop their careers that require elements of fire responsibility in the workplace.
The training is designed and is suitable for individuals who are looking to improve their fire awareness skills and maybe looking towards becoming officers within a fire fighting, investigation or prevention role and may have no formal training or experience.
On completing the training and having passed the relevant assessment necessary to deem competency, the student will be certificated by ABIOSH.
Pre-requisite – none
Duration – 4 days taught course – however students will be required to complete evening study

Health and Safety Personnel Supervisors, Engineers and Managers Individuals directly responsible for a Company’s Fire Safety Safety Committee Representatives

- Managing Fire Safety
- Principles of Fire and Explosion
- Causes and Prevention of Fire
- Fire Protection in Buildings
- Safety of People in the Event of a Fire
- Fire Risk Assessment
Assessment – Fire Safety Exam of 1 hour plus practical application
Element 1
- Outline the moral, legal and financial consequences of inadequate management of fire safety
- Outline the legal framework for the regulation of fire safety in new, altered and existing buildings (including government guidance)
- Describe the roles and powers of enforcement agencies and other external agencies in relation to fire safety
- Outline the key features of a fire safety policy Outline the main sources of external fire safety information and the principles of their application
- Explain the purpose of and the procedures for investigating fires in the workplace
- Explain the legal and organisational requirements for recording and reporting fire related incidents
Element 2
- Explain the principles of the combustion process in relation to fire safety
- Explain the principles and conditions for the ignition of solids, liquids and gases
- Identify the classification of fires
- Describe the principles of fire growth and fire spread Outline the principles of explosion and explosive combustion
Element 3
- Explain the causes of fires and explosions in typical work activities
- Outline appropriate control measures to minimise fire and explain risks
Element 4
- Outline the means of fire protection and prevention of fire and smoke spread within buildings tin relation to building construction and design
- Explain the requirements of means of escape
- Outline the methods and systems available to give early warning in case of fire – both for life safety and property protection
- Outline the selection procedures for basic fire extinguishing methods for both life risk and process risk
- Explain the requirements for ensuring access for the fire service is provided and maintained
- Outline steps to minimise the environmental impact of fire and firefighting operations
Element 5
- Materials/chemicals on site that would act as pollutants, their location and quantity
- Properties of the chemicals and materials on site
- Availability of neutralising agents
- Position of surface-water drains
- Water table levels on site
- Location of shut-off valves, so as to limit damage
- Identification of any potential areas that could be utilised as a secondary containment reservoir for contaminated water for car parks, pits and trenches
- Liners may need to be added to prevent substances passing through the surface
